Levy County – Measured Nine Feet

Skeleton of a giant indian was just unearthed under a bed  of oyster shells near Cedar Key. The skeleton measured 9 feet.
Let’s break down the significance of a nine foot skeleton.
However, some studies have suggested that skeletal shrinkage due to burial in soil can range from a few millimeters to a few centimeters. For example, a study published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences in 2011 found that long bones from cadavers buried for 1 to 10 years had lost an average of 2 to 7 mm in length. Another study published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences in 2003 examined the effects of soil pH on the length of bones and found that bones buried in acidic soil had lost an average of 2.5 cm in length.

Therefore, while it is possible for a skeleton to shrink in length over time due to burial in soil, the amount of shrinkage can vary widely depending on the specific burial conditions and other factors.

The point I am making is that:

If a bone or skeleton can shrink 7 mm in 10 years, then we can calculate how long it would take for it to shrink 76.2 mm (or 3 inches)

(76.2 mm) / (7 mm/10 years) = 1091.4 years

If there is a half-life of 1000 years where a bone shrinks half as much every 1000 years, then the amount of shrinkage can be calculated as follows:

  • First 1,000 years: 3 inches
  • Second 1,000 years: 1.5 inches (half of the remaining 3 inches)
  • Third 1,000 years: 0.75 inches (half of the remaining 1.5 inches)
  • Fourth 1,000 years: 0.375 inches (half of the remaining 0.75 inches)
  • Fifth 1,000 years: 0.1875 inches (half of the remaining 0.375 inches)
  • Sixth 1,000 years: 0.09375 inches (half of the remaining 0.1875 inches)

    Therefore, a skeleton that is 1-6,000 years old would shrink by a total of approximately 3.453125 inches (1.5 + 0.75 + 0.375 + 0.1875 + 0.09375 + 0.046875).

here is the list of the total shrinkage in inches for a bone or skeleton that is 1-6,000 years old based on the given half-life of 1000 years:

    • 1,000 years: 3 inches
    • 2,000 years: 4.5 inches
    • 3,000 years: 5.25 inches
    • 4,000 years: 5.625 inches
    • 5,000 years: 5.8125 inches
    • 6,000 years: 5.90625 inches

In life this 9 foot giant was 3-6 inches taller.
