20070920-31 CTY WATERLEVEL
Chip Fletcher is a marine geologist at UH who studies coastal changes due to climate changes. Projections show the ocean water level will rise 3 meters in 100 years from now. Projections are that storm water drains in Waikiki will be overflowed by sea water and much of Waikiki Beach will be underwater by a meter (39 inches, a bit more than a yard) within the next 100 years because of sea level rise. Fletcher places a meter stick at about the high water level mark at the Ala Wai Canal to illustrate about how high the water level will rise if the sea level rose about 1 meter drastically changing the scene. The Ala Wai Blvd. would be under water. PHOTO BY DENNIS ODA. SEPT. 20, 2007.
