Lyon County Giant Jawbone

ohio lyon countyHuge Jawbone

Found Under the New Cell House at Eddyville Prison.

In holy writ we are told that there were giants in those days. Some of these giants evidently found their way to Kentucky and died here, says the Grayson Gazette.

Sheriff W. E. Cummings exhibited to us the lower jawbone of a human being who must have been of extraordinary size. The jawbone was recently sent to him by Hon. Charles A. Nelson from Eddyville. It was found there by the workmen while quarrying rock for a new cell house for the Eddyville penitentiary, and was found connected with the Quantee mills at the earth. Trees with a diameter of three feet were growing on the ground above it.

The bone is very large and will slip over the jawbone of the largest man who can be found in this country. Some seemed to think that it belonged to an Indian chief of huge stature or to some giant who lived, moved, and had his being in some prehistoric age.
