A RELIC OF ANTIQUITY-

Mr. John D. Ludden showed us to-day a huge stone ax, recent- ly dug out of a mound near Va- sa, and donated through Mr Ludden, to the Historical Soci ety. It is the largest stone ax, we ever saw, and can scarcely be wielded with both hands. The ax was found buried with a skeleton of gigantic size, which crumbled to pieces on being dug up. It is evidently very au- cient-there is no telling how old-perhaps one or two thou- sand years. If this was a bat tle ax, there must have been giants in those days to have wielded them. It is a good thing these mound builders dis- appeared before our state was settled. If they had still contin- ued cracking skulls with such terrible weapons, our “old set- tlers,” would have had hard work to settle the St..te.-St. Paul (Minnesota) Dispatch.
