Choptank River takes its name from a tribe of Indians that inhabited both sides of the shores of this stream before its settlement by the English. They were men of large stature. In the Academy of Natural Sciences in Baltimore, there are several skeletons of these Indians (taken from an Indian mound at Sandy Hill on the Choptank near Cambridge) That measure nearly 7 feet in height with skulls of unusually large size.

Baltimore: A number of gigantic skeletons of prehistoric Indians, nearly eight feet tall, are reported to have t been discovered along the banks of a the Choptank river, by employees of the Maryland Academy of Science and are now at the academy building, I where they are being articulated and I restored. The collection comprises a eight skeletons of which those of women and children.
Strangely a lot of these alters, groups of giant skeletons, mounds etc always are near government facilities, universities, and National Parks closed from the public. It would be my guess that in the National Academy of Science no longer has thse seven foot skeletons nor will admit their existence, but i would like it if there were a few GAWM field agents that live close by would look into it and report back in the comments.

Skeletons of Prehistoric Inhabitants of Maryland Found.
Baltimore, Md., July 1. – It is learned that a number of gigantic skeletons of prehistoric Indians, nearly eight feet tall, have been discovered along the banks of the Choptank River, in this state, by employees of the Maryland Academy of Sciences. They are now at the academy’s building, where they are being articulated and restored by the academy expert. They will be placed on public exhibition early in the fall.
The collection comprises eight skeletons, of which some are those of women and children. They are not all complete, but all of the larger bones have been found, and there is at least one complete specimen of an adult man. The excavations were in progress for months, and the discovery is considered one of great importance. The remains are believed to be about 1,000 years old.

This is an old post but I live in the town over from where these were supposedly found and it is in all the descriptions and history of the county that 3 of these 7 foot skeletons were found. There are still some members of the Nanticoke tribe residing near here today, perhaps they know more.
…the Nanticoke know nothing and offer nothing. They are not the only DE tribe. I lived with n Cambridge and St. Michael’s. I will look into this one asap…
