South Waverly, Pensylvannia. Spanish Hill Skeletons

There is no doubt in my mind that after reading numerous accounts of these gigantic skeletons being found throughout this area, that this is not a “legend,” it is a fact. These Susquehannocks (Andastes) were GIANTS especially to the men of average height (4- 5.3 feet) of that time period, but also seemed “huge” to the people who dug them up over the past 100 years.  The Andaste’s AVERAGE height seems to be between 6 and 7 feet, with some exceptional human specimens being recorded to be about 8 feet in height.  Spanish Hill Spanish Hill

Think about that for a minute – Spanish Hill Spanish Hill

That would be around at least TWO FEET TALLER THAN  MANY OTHER MEN  AT THAT TIME. And it would still be considered to be HUGE by our standards today. (Shaquille O’Neal is 7 feet 1 inch, and weighs 315 lbs.)

The Grave of a Giant.

Visitors go up on Pisgah almost every day. Mrs. Atwater, who is making some improvements, is still there and Mr. Cotrell of Mansfield is there and drives the team down occasionally for visitors. The Athens Historical society sent word to the mountain that they would visit it next Saturday. They claimed to know of an Indian grave on the top that they would open. The only grave that we ever knew of there says the Try Gazette, was one on the south point of the mountain off the farm of Chas, W. Hooker. A very large thigh bone of a human being was dug up 45 years ago at that point near a spring. It was of immense size and on its being shown to Dr. Theodore Wilder, he said it must have belonged to a man 7 feet high. There were giants in those days.
